The action of "The Returned" takes place in Silesia, in the period before the events at the "Wujek" mine. The main character, Tomek Siwek, is a young man working at a combined heat and power plant. He is a member of the Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR) and agrees to spy on his colleagues from "Solidarity" during a rally in Katowice, hoping to gain the benefits promised by the authorities. However, during the demonstration, caught up in the moment, he stops carrying out his task. Instead, he becomes emotionally involved in the protest. After returning home, Tomek becomes a target of repression. Soon he faces the brutality of the system as well as his family, whose reactions are far from what he expected. As the story unfolds, Tomek changes his outlook on reality, and his life takes a new direction.
