Young people become involved in underground activities against the German occupiers. In Stach’s (T. Łomnicki) carpentry workshop operates a small cell of the Home Army, but one of the boys befriends a member of the People’s Guard and falls in love with Dorota (U. Modrzyńska), a girl from the Union of Youth Struggle. The outbreak of the ghetto uprising brings tragic consequences – during the evacuation of the Jews, Jasio (T. Janczar) dies, and the nighttime arrest of Dorota by the Gestapo forces Stach to take over her responsibilities. Andrzej Wajda’s debut film, based on a screenplay by Bohdan Czeszko and under the artistic direction of Aleksander Ford, portrays young people entangled in conflict, love, and the drama of war, revealing their courage and everyday choices in extraordinarily dangerous times.
