Director: Krzysztof Kieślowski
1975
A story about the people who remain in the shadows, even though their work is essential for the functioning of the theater. Theater tailors, painters, model makers — individuals who perform tasks crucial to the aesthetics and efficiency of a theatrical production but never step into the spotlight. In Kieślowski’s film, these anonymous art workers, though not heroes on stage, are passionate personalities who identify with their work and dedicate their lives to it. Although their role in the theater is invisible to the audience, they feel that their activity holds great significance. For them, true art happens behind the scenes, and stage stars are merely a faint reflection of the old cult of the artist. The fame of actors and the privileges that come with it are, in their view, only an illusion, because the real creators of theater are they — those who passionately devote themselves to their work, even though they will never appear on stage.
