The story of Karol (Z. Zamachowski), a Polish hairdresser who, after an unsuccessful marriage with a beautiful Frenchwoman, Dominique (J. Delpy), returns to Poland to rebuild his life. Following a divorce caused by his impotence, Karol comes back from Paris almost penniless, traveling in the suitcase of another emigrant. Upon returning to his homeland, Karol receives help from his brother (J. Stuhr), who assists him in starting work at a currency exchange office. Thanks to a clever banking transaction, he acquires a fortune, and then, wishing to win back his former wife, he takes a controversial step: fakes his own death, hoping that Dominique will come to Poland to claim the inheritance. The second part of the Three Colors trilogy by Krzysztof Kieślowski, created in screenwriting collaboration with Krzysztof Piesiewicz and with music by Zbigniew Preisner.
