Julian (Julien Sands), who spends the end of the war with his second wife in Montevideo, returns to Poland to uncover the truth about the tragic fate of his first wife, Nina (Renee Soutendijk). They both arrived there in 1938, just after their wedding, and Julian—a young consul and entrepreneur from Uruguay—took over the management of former German factories. Their happiness was quickly shattered by political tensions and the growing threat of war. Nina, a photography enthusiast, notices the disturbing disappearance of images of Jews during photo development and narrowly escapes death in an accident. Meanwhile, Julian uncovers arms smuggling for the German minority and the activities of Nazi sympathizers, including his own driver. Staś (Maciej Robakiewicz), the son of a close family friend, warns him but soon dies. Horrified by the brutalization of life, Nina falls into mental illness and is admitted to a clinic in Cologne, where she becomes the subject of experiments. A brief improvement allows Julian to place her in a quiet boarding house, but the outbreak of war finds him abroad. Nina returns to the hospital and is murdered as part of the Nazi T4 action. After the war, Julian doesn’t even have a place to light a candle at her grave.
