The film's action takes place at a small, forgotten railway station, where memories from the occupation era come alive, including a dramatic event when a train full of people broke down—among them partisans, civilians, and individuals hiding from German soldiers. The memory of this incident, which took place in 1943, shapes the lives of the film’s characters, especially the old stationmaster, who recalls that moment as pivotal, although at the time he did not realize how devastating the consequences would be. The film is also distinguished by its unique blend of comedy and horror. In the characters’ dialogues and interactions, various approaches to the war’s past can be seen—some try to ease the tension with humor, while others withdraw into silence, unable to cope with the trauma. Kutz uses the conventions of a social drama to explore social and psychological issues—the way a small, provincial community deals with the memory of the war and what remains after it. The screenplay was based on Marian Brandys’s short story "The Boy from the Train."
