Train driver Orzechowski dies in an accident under the wheels of a train. He was respected for his professionalism, but his independence often led to conflicts. The commission investigating the tragedy questions three people: the stationmaster, the assistant train driver, and the crossing guard. Each of them reveals not only facts but also their own fears and guilt. From their accounts emerges the picture of a day when a neglected semaphore lamp went out due to lack of oil, almost causing a disaster. Andrzej Munk’s film was made based on the short story The Secret of Train Driver Orzechowski by Jerzy Stefan Stawiński.
