Director: Tadeusz Konwicki
1989
A film adaptation of Adam Mickiewicz's drama. The action takes place on the eve of All Souls' Day, celebrated in the Vilnius region as the traditional "Dziady," a ritual for summoning the spirits of the dead. During this time, the ghost of the Poet returns to his homeland, revisiting memories of his youth, especially his unfulfilled love and the fate of the young people who secretly opposed the occupying authorities. "Dziady" is not only a literary adaptation but also a film about timeless values that continue to resonate in the context of national identity and the struggle for freedom. Realistic depictions of 19th-century life intertwine with dark, mysterious ritual scenes where the dead and the living meet at the boundary between two worlds. It is a film about memory, about a past that constantly influences the present.
