Director: Andrzej Wajda
2002
The film is based on Alexander Fredro’s comedy "The Revenge" and sets the action at the beginning of the 19th century within the confines of a single castle. It portrays the life of the Polish nobility in a satirical manner, highlighting both its flaws—pettiness, false piety, and disdain for the poorer nobility—and its virtues, such as hospitality, devotion to chivalric traditions, and pride in one’s social status. The main plot revolves around three storylines: the quarrel between the Castellan and the Notary, the romance between Wacław and Klara, and Raptusiewicz’s marriage plans. The film depicts a noble world fading into the past, full of superstitions and concern for appearances, where everyday life blends comedy with intrigue.
