“Farewells” is a story of love that never had a chance to fully blossom. Paweł, a young man from an aristocratic family, meets Lidka, a dancer at a nightclub. Their first encounter is filled with rebellion and defiance against social customs that Paweł cannot accept. Going to the club, he seeks to break free from the routine of his bourgeois world. Lidka, though beautiful, is bitter and disappointed with life. They begin spending time together, but their relationship, though platonic, is brief. Paweł sees her as a way to escape his social class, and his feelings are more idealistic than real. Soon, the war and Paweł’s father’s intervention end their romance. After several years, Paweł is released from a camp, but Lidka is already married—wed to Paweł’s cousin, Count Mirek. Despite the passage of time, their feelings have not faded, and a meeting in Podkowa Leśna introduces a new dynamic to their relationship. “Farewells” is a film about a love that had no chance to be fulfilled in a world full of social and wartime barriers, about yearning for what has been lost, and about people who, despite the passage of time, still cannot escape their past emotions.
