The film is a poetic meditation on death and the passage of time. Józef, a man visiting a sanatorium where his late father once stayed, is drawn into a mysterious, surreal world of memories and imagination. Traveling back to the past, he relives his childhood, returns to a small Jewish town, recalls his father with whom he never reconciled, and an unfulfilled love for Bianka, who left with his friend. His journey into the past reveals the inevitability of destruction — the town that was once full of life is now covered with tombstones, and his dreams and attempts to restore the former order meet the resistance of reality. In the end, Józef realizes he cannot turn back time, and all efforts to revive lost moments are doomed to fail. The film is based on a story by Bruno Schulz.
