Just after the war, the lives of three people intertwine in extraordinarily difficult times. Piotr (A. Łapicki), a former RAF pilot, returns to his country full of hope to start a new life, but is falsely accused by the Security Service of collaborating with the National Armed Forces. A ten-year prison sentence seems inevitable, and the innocent man faces the brutal reality of post-war Poland. Anna (E. Wiśniewska), a young and idealistic activist of the Union of Youth Struggle, and Jakuszyn (T. Łomnicki), the secretary of the district committee of the Polish Workers' Party, become entangled in Piotr’s tragedy. The story shows that even the noblest intentions can be crushed by the ruthless machinery of power. The film is based on a novel by Roman Bratny, which was then banned from publication, revealing the personal drama of an individual confronting the system, where morality, loyalty, and courage become more valuable than any ideological declarations.
