Hubert (Bartosz Obuchowicz), the son of a soldier living in exile in England, grows up under the harsh conditions of post-war Poland. His mother, harassed by the Security Office, sends him to an eccentric aunt (Maja Komorowska), who lives on a former estate and tries to maintain a small herd of horses, aided by old acquaintances and young people from wealthy families. The boy attends a school full of indoctrination, while at home he learns other, more practical truths. The aunt leads a double life: on one hand, a pre-war landowner; on the other, a party member and postal worker. Through cunning and ingenuity, she manages to run a riding club and even reaches a high-ranking official on horseback, and her interactions with the authorities often lead to humorous situations. Ultimately, however, she too is arrested and sent west.
