The Gateway of Europe
Director: Jerzy Wójcik
1999
The film’s action takes place in the winter of 1918. Three young, naive, and enthusiastic mercy sisters—Zosia, Hala, and Irena—set out for a field hospital near the front lines, viewing it as a patriotic duty and a romantic adventure. Zosia also hopes to reunite with her brother Paweł. Upon arrival, they quickly realize how difficult the working conditions are. On the very first day, they are sent to fetch missing medical supplies, while Zosia feverishly searches for any sign of her brother. As artillery fire intensifies, preparations for evacuation begin. Although the sleds aren’t enough to carry all the wounded, the girls decide to stay put. Soon, with the arrival of the Bolsheviks, they will have to face the greatest challenge of their lives.
