Wit Braun (D. Olbrychski), a young engineer, returns to his hometown after several years of studying. Upon arrival, he meets his father (J. Kreczmar), aunt, and sister, who hope he will take responsibility for the family home and the old workshop. Wit feels the weight of their expectations and a reluctance toward the constraints of family life, while simultaneously observing how the world around him is changing—new apartment blocks rising where his childhood home once stood. Krzysztof Zanussi’s film portrays the clash between tradition and modernity, as well as between personal ambitions and duties to loved ones. The generational conflict and differing perspectives on life surface in everyday situations and small domestic tensions. The characters confront their own limitations and decisions that shape their fates, showing that the influence of family and the past is hard to escape, even when consciously choosing independence.
