Alexandria in the 4th century AD. Paphnutius, a monk who has lived in seclusion in the desert for years, has a vision of Thais—the city’s most famous actress and dancer. Believing her to be a sign from God, he decides to convert the woman and sets off for Alexandria, where he stays with his old friend Nicias, a wealthy patrician and philosopher. Thanks to him, Paphnutius attends a party where Thais performs, and her beauty and personality leave a profound impression on the monk. Paphnutius tries to persuade the courtesan to renounce earthly pleasures, promising her God’s love and eternal life. At first, Thais mocks him, but gradually—under the influence of his sermons and experiences revealing the fragility of human life—she begins to consider conversion. Ultimately, she enters a monastery, and during their shared journey across the desert, it is Paphnutius who falls under her spell and discovers earthly love within himself. Torn between his feelings and his faith, he returns to solitary asceticism to atone for his thoughts. When he finally decides to confess the truth and heads back to the monastery, it is too late—Thais has died.
