The film begins with an episode from 1920, during the Polish-Soviet War. At a crossroads, by a solitary birch tree, a young uhlan named Jakubek bows his head over the grave of his beloved. He makes a vow: "I will come to you whenever you call me..." In the present day, Jakubek is nearly ninety years old. He longs deeply to reunite with his youthful love. He even has a coffin prepared for him, made by his fellow war comrades—Kotek, Ignatko, and Gniewisz. Yet, when Jakubek finally breathes his last and stands at the gates of Heaven, Saint Peter stops him. One cannot enter there with a saber at their side...
