A psychological war drama portraying the tragic fate of a young Jew in occupied Warsaw, enduring the hell condemned to the annihilation of his people. The film is a poignant record of loneliness, fear, and the breakdown of moral reference points in a world stripped of all rules. Jakub, sentenced for an accidental killing, is sent to prison, which he leaves in September 1939. In the Warsaw Ghetto, he works as a gravedigger, but after his mother’s death — almost against his own will — he decides to escape. Hiding on the “Aryan” side, he finds refuge with several people, including Lucyna and a former cellmate from prison, Malina. However, each of these places proves to be only a temporary shelter, and his sense of alienation grows. Jakub longs to end his life in hiding and return to the ghetto, only to discover that it has already been liquidated. He then joins the underground resistance, working in a clandestine printing press. When the Germans surround the premises, Jakub, seeing no other way out, takes a desperate act — he blows himself and his enemies up with a bundle of grenades, choosing death as his final act of freedom.
