Atanazy Bazakbal (Jan Frycz), a young writer, suffers from unrequited love for Hela (Maria Pakulnis), the daughter of a wealthy Jew, who marries Prince Prepudrech. Disappointed, he marries the simple Zosia (Grażyna Trela). Meanwhile, the country plunges into political upheaval as the communists seize power. Atanazy hides with his friend, Count Łohojski, who is killed during the riots. A group of aristocratic friends retreats to the mountains to escape the chaos, engaging in conversations about art and politics. Pregnant Zosia discovers Atanazy’s affair with Hela and takes her own life. Upon returning to the country, Atanazy confronts a new, brutal political reality. He refuses to cooperate with the authorities and is killed by soldiers during an attempt to escape. The film adapts Witkiewicz’s novel, depicting the tragic condition of the individual in the face of social and political upheaval.
