A moral play depicting the conflict between approaches to human freedom and responsibility, set against the dramatic situation of rescuing a man attempting suicide. The action takes place on the top floor of a skyscraper, where a young man stands on the ledge. The prosecutor calls in a young psychiatrist, Dr. Krzysztof Kucharski, who suggests entrusting the case to Professor Leszczyński. A dispute arises between the young and the experienced doctor: the professor advocates persuading the man to make an independent decision and abandon the suicide attempt, while Dr. Kucharski favors immediate intervention using pharmacological means and technology. Ultimately, the professor succeeds, though at the cost of his own health.
