In 1912, a wealthy but ailing old man named Szczebieniew arrives in Italy with his young and beautiful wife, Zinaida. Bored with the quiet life beside her husband, the wife seeks excitement and fleeting affairs, while Szczebieniew watches her antics indulgently, hoping their relationship will bring the longed-for offspring. The film portrays the subtle tensions within the marriage, the clash between youthful desires and the cares of old age, and ironic observations of human weaknesses and ambitions.
