After the American army liberated the concentration camp, its surviving prisoners were transferred to a special center for the homeless. Among the thousands of displaced persons, a significant portion were Poles who—though formally free—still lived in an atmosphere of chaos and uncertainty. The brutality of war had left a deep mark on them: in their relations with the Germans, in the struggle for food, and in the tension that accompanied every action. Andrzej Wajda’s film, based on the prose of Tadeusz Borowski, including the famous "The Battle of Grunwald," powerfully depicts this reality. The symbolic reconstruction of history—the staging of the Matejko battle—becomes one of the most moving events in the lives of the camp’s inhabitants, reflecting their longings, illusions, and desire to regain their dignity.
