After a long, five-month voyage, Captain Roman Markowski's crew eagerly awaits their return to Świnoujście. When it turns out the port is crowded and they have to spend several days waiting at anchor, tension on board rises—one sailor throws himself overboard, and the second officer, Ryszard Kalewik, is hospitalized in a state of breakdown. Upon reaching the shore, Markowski discovers that his partner Teresa, an actress, was not waiting for him at the port. Their relationship is put to the test by life at sea and solitude on land. The captain visits Kalewik in the hospital and learns of his dramatic dilemma—to flee Hamburg and abandon the sea forever.
