The film’s action takes place in 1863, during the January Uprising. A wounded insurgent, Prince Odrowąż, is taken to the manor of Salomea Brynicka, who saves his life. A love blossoms between them, but the prince’s mother opposes the marriage, taking her son away and leaving Salomea in despair. The film, styled in a theatrical manner and full of quotations brought to life by the art of Artur Grottger, is the first adaptation of Stefan Żeromski’s 1912 novel *Faithful River*.
