The series tells the story of Barbara, whose life unfolds against the backdrop of significant historical events as well as personal inner dramas. The action begins in August 1914, when the Germans occupy Kaliniec and the town is abandoned by its inhabitants. After numerous dramatic experiences, she returns to Kaliniec, where, full of memories, she sets off in an unknown direction as World War I breaks out. During her journey, Barbara recalls her life—from youthful love for Toliboski, through her marriage to Bogumił, with whom she endures many hardships. During their time together, Barbara gives birth to children, and the greatest tragedy becomes the death of her son Piotruś, which drives her into depression. Over time, family life grows increasingly turbulent. The series is based on the novel by Maria Dąbrowska and portrays not only Barbara’s private life but also her confrontation with political and social changes. Family dramas, financial difficulties, betrayals, and losses lead her to a state of disappointment and loneliness, despite her lifelong efforts to maintain a sense of duty and loyalty to her family. Her story is also a testament to the decline of a lineage and the social transformations in Poland at the beginning of the 20th century.
