The film tells the story of Barbara, whose life unfolds against the backdrop of significant historical events and personal inner dramas. The action begins in August 1914, when Germany occupies Kaliniec and the town is abandoned by its inhabitants. After many harrowing experiences, she returns to Kaliniec, where, full of memories, she sets off in an unknown direction as World War I breaks out. During her journey, Barbara reflects on her life—from her youthful love for Toliboski, through her marriage to Bogumił, with whom she faces numerous hardships. Throughout their life together, Barbara gives birth to children, and the greatest tragedy strikes with the death of her son Piotruś, plunging her into depression. Over time, family life grows increasingly turbulent. The film is based on the novel by Maria Dąbrowska and portrays not only Barbara’s private life but also her confrontation with political and social changes. Family dramas, financial struggles, betrayals, and losses lead her to a state of disappointment and solitude, despite her lifelong efforts to maintain a sense of duty and loyalty to her family. Her story also stands as a testament to the decline of a noble lineage and the social transformations in Poland at the beginning of the 20th century.
