1919
The film, based on a true romance that shook Warsaw at the end of the 19th century, tells the story of a tragic love affair between a cornet in the Tsarist army and the famous actress Maria Wiśnowska. Barteniew, an emotionally unstable man, could not withstand his psychological crisis and killed her. Despite committing the crime, he did not take his own life; instead, he stood trial. In 1899, a highly publicized trial took place, ending with Barteniew being expelled from the army and sentenced to long-term imprisonment. After serving his sentence, Barteniew returned to Warsaw as a vagabond, spending his days at his beloved’s grave, unable to escape the tragic memories. Over time, he fell into complete social degradation, and his life ended alone and forgotten. This story became a symbol of the ruthless power of passion that leads to destruction, as well as the tragic consequences of uncontrolled emotions.
