The film tells the coming-of-age story of two brothers from a Gdańsk middle school who, in the spring of 1939, carry out a daring act—they hijack the limousine of the German consul. For the young protagonists, it is initially an innocent game, but their flawless evasion of punishment plunges them into a world where the line between play and serious action becomes increasingly blurred. Soon, the brothers, full of youthful courage and rebellion, decide to repeat their stunt, this time in a more serious context. Their plan evolves into a literary theme and a prelude to political activism as they attempt to use their act to express opposition to the growing threat of war. The film shows how youthful dreams of freedom and rebellion begin to clash with the brutal reality of the impending war, as the protagonists come to realize that their actions may have far graver consequences than they had originally anticipated.
