"Law and the Fist" is a film often described as a "Polish western." The action takes place after World War II in the western territories, which, much like the American prairies, await their pioneers and settlers. Unlike classic westerns set in the United States, this film transposes the genre to the realities of postwar Poland. The film depicts how, on the former German lands of postwar Poland, much like in the American Wild West, land is claimed in two ways: peacefully, through settlement, and through the use of violence, which draws the protagonists into a whirlwind of relentless confrontations. It is a portrayal of the clash between the desire to build a better future and the brutality and inevitability of violence that dominated these lands.
