The film tells the story of Jan Piszczyk, an unlucky man caught up in the absurd reality of the Polish People's Republic. Sentenced to five years in prison, upon release he becomes a victim of the system and constant misunderstandings. Although he tries to find meaning in life, his streak of misfortune keeps repeating. Renata, fascinated by his "self-sacrifice," is drawn to him, yet Piszczyk, despite his willingness, cannot find his place in her world. His life is a series of unexpected events that end with his re-arrest. The film portrays the life of an individual within a totalitarian regime, full of absurdity, rebellion, and social critique.
