Jadwiga Kolęda, the energetic head of the commune (Bożena Dykiel), rules with a firm hand both at work and at home. She forms a comic pair with her husband Władek, a kind and somewhat submissive man, while she herself blossoms in the flirtations of the local police chief (Krzysztof Kowalewski), and Władek flirts with a gentle widow. Their growing daughter Dorota (Maria Gładkowska) becomes unexpectedly pregnant, which prompts the head of the commune to concoct a fake marriage followed by a divorce and to find a suitable candidate. The scheme draws in more people — including a clever city slicker who introduces Bronek’s husband (Andrzej Golejewski), a former prisoner pretending to be the fiancé on the mother’s orders. The young couple, embarrassed by the situation, gradually rebel against the arrangement and have no intention of parting ways after the wedding. Ultimately, each of them — Dorota, Bronek, and even Władek, who had until then been trapped under Jadwiga’s dominance — finds their own “escape route” and freedom from the mother’s coercion.
