A student theater group affiliated with the polytechnic in a provincial town is preparing a new, experimental performance. Director Kwaśniewski announces the creation of the "Theater of Greater Trust" — a play in which actors recite literary classics from inside a soundproof booth, invisible and unheard by the audience. The viewers are to judge them solely based on trust. While an extraordinary set is being built in the carpentry workshop, the theater struggles with organizational problems and rivalry from a competing cabaret. Confident Kwaśniewski, portrayed as a visionary, gains the support of the university authorities and proclaims the birth of a new theater.
