Early 1980s. Piotr, an independent journalist for "Tygodnik," is investigating the death of a young woman who died in a fire at her workplace. When the factory refuses to pay compensation to the victim’s mother, Piotr publishes an accusatory report against the factory director. However, he soon discovers that he has been used by the local authorities, and an innocent man dies of a heart attack after the article is published. Devastated, Piotr abandons his profession, but during the August strikes, he decides to take the side of the workers. To his surprise, he encounters Dąbkówna there — a journalist who had previously been involved in the manipulation.
