The film tells the story of Ola and Aleksander Wat, depicting their life in pre-war Warsaw, when Aleksander – a renowned poet and futurist – was entering the world of the artistic bohemia, and his wife Ola was one of the most beautiful blossoms of Warsaw society. The Wats' relationship is full of passion and intellectual rivalry, where art, politics, and love intertwine in the turbulent 1930s. When the war breaks out, their lives undergo a complete transformation. As Jews, they must flee from the occupiers. After the German occupation of Poland, the Wats attempt to escape eastward, seeking refuge in the USSR. However, there is neither a safe haven nor shelter for them – they are forced to live in fear, wary of both the Germans and the Bolshevik regime. Aleksander is arrested by the NKVD, while Ola and their son are deported to Siberia.
