In the late 1950s, Fabian (M. Stuhr) returns to the country—a musician seeking respite in Ciechocinek after wartime exile. Waiting for him there is his sister Wanda (S. Bohosiewicz). Instead of starting his life anew in silence, he forms a lively swing band made up of unlikely but enthusiastic locals: a policeman, a doctor, a piano tuner, and a restaurant manager. For vocals, he chooses Modesta (A. Rybicka), a shy English teacher. Wanda, despite her advancing illness, also joins the musical adventure. Although Fabian keeps clear of the political tensions of the era, he cannot escape the attention of the authorities and underground circles. And when Modesta suddenly disappears without a trace, a sense of unease begins to grow around the band.
