Magda, freshly divorced, moves into the modest room of her sister Ewa, a student at the University of Physical Education. Both must cope with daily struggles—Magda loses her job at the editorial office, and Ewa barely makes ends meet on her scholarship. Every step they take is watched by the nosy landlady. When an opportunity arises to travel to New York, the sisters decide to raise funds for Magda’s ticket. They become unexpected "skyscraper climbers": peering through windows and breaking into the apartments of wealthy newcomers, taking advantage of the chaos at banquets and street market deals. This humorous and risky jumping between worlds of poverty and luxury reflects both the rapid economic changes and the ingenuity of women. In New York, their adventures pick up pace—the climb up the glass skyscrapers becomes even more thrilling. Although they return empty-handed, fate smiles upon them in the form of an inheritance from their former landlady, securing them stability and prosperity.
