The film’s screenplay is based on themes from two novels by Tadeusz Dołęga-Mostowicz: Dr. Murek Reduced and The Second Life of Dr. Murek. Both books are among the most daring in the author’s oeuvre, primarily due to their uncompromising critique of the social mechanisms of the Second Polish Republic. However, the sharpest critical elements did not pass the filter of contemporary censorship, so instead of political polemic, the film offers a tightly crafted drama with elements of suspense. The titular Dr. Murek, wronged by intrigue and stripped of his position in a small-town magistrate’s office, heads to Warsaw seeking a new beginning. The capital, however, turns out to be a place where it’s easy to hit rock bottom—Murek takes on the simplest jobs, and chance pulls him into the orbit of the underworld. Soon, together with the dangerous “Black Kazik,” he takes part in an assault on the villa of the influential president Czabran. After the crime, the situation becomes even more complicated: Arleta, Kazik’s lover, kills her accomplice in the hope of starting a new life by Murek’s side. Murek, however—though he does not shy away from her intimacy—has his own plan: to use the chaos to ingratiate himself with Czabran and become his son-in-law. Murek’s fate begins to teeter between the criminal fringe and high society, drawing the protagonist into a moral game from which it is difficult to emerge unscathed.
