The film's action begins during a football match between Kraków and Moscow. Dodek, a young athlete, fouls one of the Russian players. At that moment, World War I breaks out, immediately plunging the characters into the whirlwind of historical events. In an abandoned hut, Dodek, a subject of Austro-Hungary, finds a Russian officer's coat. He dons this disguise in an unexpectedly clever way and is soon "rescued" by advancing Russian troops. Mistaken for a Russian officer, Dodek takes up quarters in a Polish manor, where his orderly turns out to be... the Russian footballer he had fouled earlier. In his new role, Dodek becomes the hero of countless adventures: treating sick soldiers, courting the maid Zuzia, gaining the favor of the colonel’s wife, and even causing a false alarm and scandal during a visit from the Grand Duke. However, his true identity is eventually uncovered, and Dodek is accused of espionage. In a dramatic moment, he escapes danger using wit and courage. Fortunately for him, the legionnaires’ attack breaks the front line, allowing Dodek to finally return to his own—both literally and metaphorically—finding a sense of safety and peace after the chaos of war.
