In a small town during World War II, Father Konrad (J. Radziwiłowicz) carries out his duties, though a growing unease stirs within him. His attention is captured by Michael Pacher’s painting "The Devil Presents Saint Augustine with the Book of Vices" (1455), foreshadowing the moral trial that awaits him. During confession, a young partisan nicknamed "Lynx" (P. Bajor) asks for absolution before killing a local traitor. The priest strives to save both the victim and the executor. He visits an old wheelwright (F. Pieczka), who is hiding Jews, and offers "Lynx" a solution that might save his soul. In visions, the boy appears cloaked in black, with the face of an angel and devilish claws—both fascinating and frightening at once.
