The book depicts social changes in the Polish People's Republic through the life of Michał Toporny, the son of a peasant who, through determination, attains an education and high-ranking positions. However, his professional success comes at the cost of distancing himself from his family roots—Michał leaves his first wife and son, and his second marriage ends in betrayal. Later, he dedicates himself to raising both sons and visits his ancestral village, where their car falls into the water, and the sons take part in burning down the old cottage, symbolically closing a chapter of the past. The story reveals the price of social advancement and the conflict between ambition and personal happiness.
