A group of high school graduates, deeply moved by the appeal of the Commander-in-Chief, decide to complete their military service before starting university. At the infantry cadet school, they quickly become valuable soldiers. Staś, Jurek, Witold, and Wojtek form an inseparable quartet, though their friendship is tested by Staś’s love for Wanda—the beloved of Jurek. During military exercises, Jurek, consumed by jealousy, attacks his rival with a rifle. One night, a storm ignites a fire in the village. The army rushes to help, saving the residents' belongings. Fire blocks Staś’s escape route; severely burned, he is rescued by Captain Śmigielski, who, however, dies himself. The captain’s death deeply affects Jurek, who asks Staś for forgiveness and wishes him happiness with Wanda, while turning his feelings toward Zosia, who has loved him for a long time. In the capital, the annual military parade is held before the Commander-in-Chief. The impressive review, the soldiers’ magnificent bearing, and the striking figure of Staś in the uniform of a mountain rifle officer so move Wanda’s mother that she agrees to her daughter’s marriage to Staś.
