After the war, an RAF lieutenant returns to Poland with his English wife, hoping for a peaceful life after years of wartime turmoil. However, he quickly becomes a victim of Stalinist repression—sent to prison following a fabricated trial. His wife, fighting for his release, faces a ruthless system that leaves no room for justice. When all attempts at rescue fail, she focuses on ensuring the safety of herself and their child. The film portrays the individual's struggle within an oppressive state machine and the difficult fight for survival of a family in the brutal realities of Stalinist Poland.
