General Pankratov's Daughter

General Pankratov's Daughter

Director: Mieczysław Znamierowski

1934

78 min.
b&w

General Pankratov fiercely combats the revolutionary movement, unaware that his own daughter, Aniuta, is increasingly drawn to the rebels' cause. Raised by a Polish mother—a daughter of an exile—she carries within her both sensitivity and a rebellious spirit, which leads her straight into the arms of Bolesław, a young Polish revolutionary. He saves her after the bloody suppression of a demonstration, and their bond grows stronger despite the opposition around them. Aniuta breaks off her engagement to Count Bobrow, proud of his role in dispersing the protest, and becomes even more deeply involved with Bolesław. Meanwhile, Bolesław carries out an attack on Pankratov himself, leaving the general paralyzed. The arrested revolutionary faces death, but Aniuta secures his freedom and helps him escape abroad. Yet she sees no place for herself anymore—torn between love, loyalty, and guilt, she chooses a tragic end, throwing herself into the river. Her tragedy becomes a poignant symbol of an era where great passions clashed with ruthless politics.
