In the last days of August 1939, the Poles in Gdańsk increasingly feel the tension before the outbreak of war. The growing hostility from the Germans is mixed with gestures of sympathy from those who remember the good-neighborly relations. At the Polish Post Office, the daily work of the postmen, telegraph operators, and management is interwoven with conversations about the upcoming events, though each of them still tries to focus on their plans for September 1st. However, the increasingly frequent beatings and searches confirm that conflict is inevitable. During the night shift from August 31 to September 1, a telegraph operator notices a cut in communications. The postal workers take up arms, and the commander of their defense is the first to fall. Despite the losses, the crew fights to the end — until the last bullet.
