The film consists of three novellas, each featuring children during World War II, depicting their sad and confused perspective on the world. In "On the Road," Janek sets out in search of his father; in "A Letter from the Camp," Zbyszek and his brothers await their father's return from a prisoner-of-war camp; and in "A Drop of Blood," Mirek moves between hiding places until he comes face to face with a German officer—the metaphorical title refers to his Polish-Jewish fate. Together with Różewicz’s earlier war dramas, "Free City" and "Westerplatte," the film paints a portrait of the tragic September 1939.
