Director: Andrzej Wajda
1958
On the eve of the end of the war, a young soldier, Maciek Chełmicki (Z. Cybulski), faces a task that will put his conscience to the ultimate test – he must eliminate an influential politician. At the same time, he meets Krystyna (E. Krzyżewska) in a hotel bar, and an unexpected feeling begins to grow between them. These two worlds – brutal duty and delicate connection – constantly intertwine, forcing the protagonist to make a choice whose consequences prove to be dramatic. Andrzej Wajda’s film, though based on the work of Jerzy Andrzejewski, defies simple political interpretations. It focuses on a young man entangled in history and moral dilemmas, rather than on ideological figures of the era, which is why it has become one of the most important and recognizable films of the Polish Film School.
