A contemporary psychological and social drama set in a provincial town, where beneath the surface of apparent calm lie painful conflicts and human tragedies. The young doctor Adam Rawicz takes up a job in eastern Poland and gradually uncovers the complicated lives of the residents. He begins an affair with Teresa, the wife of the severely ill school principal, while also facing a difficult moral dilemma as he must determine the cause of a child's death. Although those around him urge him to cover up the case and blame the mother of the illegitimate child, Rawicz chooses to perform an autopsy, which reveals that the death may have been a tragic accident.
