Director: Krzysztof Zanussi
1976
At a summer academic conference, experienced professors and young scholars come together. The senior lecturer, Szelestowski (Z. Zapasiewicz), subtly tests the moral and intellectual limits of his young colleague Kruszyński (P. Garlicki) through conversations and debates. In the background, tension grows between the students and the organizers, related to the rules of the competition for the best scientific paper. Among the participants is also a young British woman, unfamiliar with local social games and academic conventions. Krzysztof Zanussi’s film raises questions about the limits of compromise, responsibility, and integrity in the world of science. Through intergenerational dialogues and subtle tensions, it shows how the ethical values of young researchers can be shaped or undermined by the cynicism and conformity of their older mentors.
