The film's story begins on November 30, 1941, when the Prime Minister of the Polish government and Commander-in-Chief, General Władysław Sikorski, arrives in Kuybyshev by plane. Onboard, the general engages in a conversation with a young lieutenant, Andrzej Radwan, whom he entrusts to remain at the Polish embassy in Kuybyshev as a trusted man during his talks with Stalin in Moscow. Against the backdrop of historical events, the process of forming Polish armed forces in the USSR is shown, as well as General Anders’s efforts to free the Polish Army from communist control. While serving at the embassy, Radwan encounters an old military acquaintance, Captain Wicherski, who decides to desert and stay in the USSR. This fact triggers a conflict and serious accusations against Radwan. Cornered by reality, political intrigue, and lack of support, Radwan struggles with feelings of powerlessness, loneliness, and lost hope. He contemplates suicide but cannot bring himself to take the final step. The film portrays the drama of an individual caught in the whirlwind of historical events, where loyalty, duty, and personal morality clash with the brutal politics and suspicion of wartime.
