Director: Witold Lesiewicz
1961
The film realistically portrays the dilemmas faced by officers of the Polish Second Army at the end of World War II. The action takes place during the spring offensive of 1945, as a unit prepares to cross the Nysa River. Colonel Czapran leads his soldiers into a risky operation, but during a tense dispute, he strikes his deputy, Ensign Szumibor, which sparks a conflict and a challenge to a duel. Captain Hyrny, the military prosecutor, tries to defuse the situation to avoid unnecessary bloodshed. Shortly after these events, Colonel Czapran and Private Anklewicz are killed during a daring assault. The film shows how personal conflicts within the military hierarchy affect the lives of soldiers and lead to tragic consequences, even though their goal is victory. "April" is a story about wartime morality, internal conflicts, and the price paid by those who attempt to uphold dignity and justice amid the chaos of war.
